Alexandrite is a chromium-bearing variety of chrysoberyl, and its colour-change property is one of the rarest optical phenomena in gemology. Chromium causes the stone to absorb light selectively: in daylight and cool artificial light (sources rich in blue and green wavelengths), alexandrite appears teal-to-bluish-green; in incandescent or candlelight (sources rich in red wavelengths), the same stone shifts to purplish-red or raspberry. This is a true colour change — not a subtle shift or surface reflection effect, but a wholesale shift in perceived colour driven by the stone’s crystal chemistry. Natural alexandrite is among the most expensive gemstones in the world precisely because of this property; lab-created alexandrite reproduces the chromium structure and the full colour-change effect completely.
