About Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) whose purple color is caused by trace amounts of iron impurities within the crystal structure combined with natural irradiation — the iron atoms, when irradiated, create color centers that absorb yellow and green wavelengths and transmit purple and violet. The intensity and exact hue of purple in amethyst — from pale lavender through medium violet to deep reddish-purple — depends on the concentration of iron and the degree of irradiation. Amethyst's purple can be lightened or removed by heating (the color centers are thermally unstable), which is how citrine is commercially produced from amethyst rough. Lab-created amethyst replicates the same iron-and-irradiation color mechanism under controlled conditions, producing a consistent, inclusion-free stone with predictable color. Amethyst is 7 Mohs — durable for ring wear. It is the February birthstone and has been used in jewelry for thousands of years; in ancient Greece and Rome, amethyst was considered a guard against intoxication (the name derives from the Greek amethystos, “not drunk”), and it was one of the stones on the High Priest’s breastplate in the Hebrew Bible. Its purple color made it historically associated with royalty and was a prominent stone in European royal jewelry through the medieval period and into the 18th century.

About Blue Sapphire

Sapphire is a variety of corundum (aluminum oxide, Al₂O₃) — the same mineral as ruby, which is simply red corundum. Corundum in its pure form is colorless; blue sapphire's color is caused by trace amounts of iron and titanium within the crystal structure. Titanium alone produces a yellow color; iron alone produces a pale blue; the combination of iron and titanium together creates the strong, saturated blue characteristic of fine sapphire through a process called intervalence charge transfer, where electrons move between adjacent iron and titanium ions and absorb specific wavelengths of visible light. The most celebrated natural sapphires — Kashmiri sapphires, Burmese sapphires, and Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) sapphires — have been prized in jewelry for over two millennia; sapphire is mentioned in ancient Persian, Hebrew, and Greek texts. Lab-created blue sapphire has the same aluminum oxide composition, hardness (9 Mohs — the second hardest natural mineral after diamond), and color mechanism as natural sapphire.
