About the Asscher Cut

The Asscher cut was patented in 1902 by Joseph Asscher of the I.J. Asscher Diamond Company in Amsterdam. It is a square step cut: the outline is square with the corners cropped to create an octagonal silhouette, and the facets beneath the table are arranged in concentric rectangular steps that descend to the culet (the bottom point or facet) like a staircase. Unlike brilliant cuts, which are designed to maximise light dispersion (fire and sparkle), step cuts are designed to maximise clarity and visual depth: the parallel step facets act as mirrors, reflecting each other and the interior of the stone, creating the characteristic “hall of mirrors” or “window” effect visible when looking straight down into the table. Because the step facets show the interior of the stone clearly, inclusions are more visible in a step cut than in a brilliant cut of the same clarity grade — lab-created garnet’s typically clean clarity is well-suited to the step cut format. The Asscher cut became one of the signature cuts of the Art Deco era (1920s–1940s) because its geometric precision, angular outline, and architectural faceting aligned with the movement’s preference for bold geometry over organic decoration.
