About the Half-and-Half Design

The half-and-half layout divides the stone arc into two equal sections of contrasting stones meeting at the band’s midpoint. The contrast here is body tone: black opal has a dark base (N1–N4 on the opal body tone scale), which creates high contrast with the play-of-colour; white opal has a light base (N8–N9), where the play-of-colour appears against a pale, milky ground. On the same ring, these two visual experiences sit side by side. Because the ring is a continuous band rather than a fixed-orientation ring (no prong or setting that locks its position on the finger), it can be rotated: wear it with the black opal section at the top for a darker, more dramatic look; rotate it so the white opal section is prominent for a lighter, more iridescent look. The play-of-colour in both sections will also shift as the light angle changes throughout the day — indirect indoor light, direct sunlight, and candlelight all produce different spectral flashes in opal.

About Lab-Created Opal

Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica; its play-of-colour (the spectral flashes that move across the surface) is caused by the diffraction of light through a regular grid of silica spheres within the stone. Lab-created opal has the same composition and produces the same play-of-colour effect as natural opal, formed under controlled conditions. The Mohs hardness (5.5–6.5) and care requirements are identical to natural opal — lab-created does not mean more durable; it means more consistent and conflict-free. The cabochon cut — smooth and domed, without facets — is the traditional cut for opal because it maximises the visible play-of-colour across the dome’s surface.
