This emerald cut moonstone necklace features a genuine natural rainbow moonstone in a rectangular emerald/step cut, approximately 8mm × 6mm, set in a four-prong setting that holds the stone with minimal metal interference and maximum visibility. Rainbow moonstone is prized for its adularescence — a phenomenon where a glowing blue-white light appears to float and shift beneath the stone's surface as it moves through the light, caused by light scattering between alternating feldspar layers within the stone's interior. What Is Adularescence?

Adularescence is the optical phenomenon that defines moonstone — a soft, glowing light that appears to float just below the stone's surface, shifting position and intensity as the stone or the light source moves. Unlike the surface-level sparkle of faceted transparent gems, adularescence appears to come from within the stone — a three-dimensional, moving light effect. It is caused by the interference of light as it passes between alternating microscopic layers of two different feldspar minerals (orthoclase and albite) within the stone's interior. In rainbow moonstone — a variety of labradorite — this floating light typically appears as a vivid blue-white glow against a colorless or near-transparent body, creating a particularly dramatic adularescence effect.

The emerald cut's large, flat table facet and parallel step facets allow the eye to look directly into the stone's depth without the distraction of many small facets breaking up the view.
