Oval moonstone. Blue adularescence flash. Moissanite accent side stones — a three-stone stud with the celestial inner glow moonstone is known for.

These moonstone stud earrings feature an oval-cut moonstone center stone with a blue adularescence flash — the signature inner glow unique to moonstone — flanked by lab-created moissanite accent stones in a three-stone stud setting with prong-held stones and friction push-back posts. The blue flash moves across the stone's surface as the earring tilts with the wearer's movement, shifting from the center of the stone outward and back depending on the angle of the light. Available as a single earring or a pair, in 925 sterling silver, yellow gold plated, or rose gold plated. Handcrafted in Jaipur.

Adularescence: Moonstone's Blue Flash

Adularescence is the optical phenomenon that defines moonstone — a soft, billowing inner glow that appears to float within the stone and move across its surface as the viewing angle changes. It is caused by the stone's internal structure: moonstone is a feldspar mineral (orthoclase and albite) composed of alternating layers of two different feldspars that grew together during cooling. When light enters the stone, it scatters between these microscopic alternating layers — the layering diffracts the light, producing a soft, diffuse glow rather than the direct reflection you see from a flat surface or the facet-by-facet brilliance of a cut gemstone. The color of this glow depends on the thickness of the alternating layers: thinner layers produce a blue adularescence; thicker layers produce white or silver. Blue adularescence is the most prized variety — the billowing blue glow moving across a translucent body is considered the most visually striking expression of the phenomenon. Unlike brilliance or fire (which are produced by facet geometry and occur in any lighting direction), adularescence is directional: the glow is most visible when light hits the stone from a specific angle, and it shifts and moves as that angle changes — making moonstone a uniquely animated gemstone that looks different in every light condition and from every viewing position.

Why Oval Cut for Moonstone?

Moonstone's adularescence is best displayed in a smooth, domed surface (cabochon), but faceted moonstones in oval cuts retain the stone's translucent body and allow adularescence to be visible through the faceted top surface while adding some reflective brilliance at the edges. The oval's continuous curved outline also accommodates the stone's glow well — the adularescence billows outward from the center toward the oval's curved edges, filling the stone's entire face rather than being interrupted by corners or points. In a stud setting where the stone sits close to the earlobe, the oval's smooth outline is comfortable, secure, and visible from the front without the protruding geometry of a more angular cut.

About Moonstone

Moonstone is a variety of feldspar with a hardness of 6–6.5 Mohs — softer than most gemstones, requiring some care for everyday wear. It has been prized since antiquity: ancient Romans believed it was formed from solidified moonlight; in India, it is considered a sacred stone associated with the moon deity and fertility. Moonstone is one of three June birthstones alongside pearl and alexandrite.

Care Instructions

  • Moonstone is relatively soft (6–6.5 Mohs) — remove before activities that could cause impact or abrasion
  • Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotions and perfumes (especially for plated finishes)
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth — avoid ultrasonic cleaners which can damage the stone's layered internal structure
  • Store in a padded box away from harder gemstones that could scratch the surface
