Natural moldavite. Hexagon cut. Bezel set on a split shank band. A stone that is not a mineral — a glass formed from a meteorite impact 14.8 million years ago, found only in one region of Central Europe.

This moldavite ring features a natural hexagon-cut Bohemian moldavite held in a bezel setting on a split shank band. The bezel — a continuous metal collar around the stone's circumference — is the most protective setting for moldavite's relatively soft and brittle tektite glass surface, guarding the stone's edges from hard contact during wear. The split shank divides below the bezel setting and rejoins at the band, framing the stone from below and creating a more substantial visual presence around the center stone than a plain solitaire band. Available in 925 sterling silver, yellow gold plated, or rose gold plated in whole and quarter sizes from US 3 to 10. Handcrafted in Jaipur.

What Is Moldavite?

Moldavite is a tektite — a natural glass formed by the heat and pressure generated when a large meteorite strikes the Earth's surface. The impact melts both the meteorite and the terrestrial rock at the impact site; the molten material is ejected at high velocity, and as it travels through the atmosphere it cools rapidly into irregular glass fragments that fall back to earth across a dispersal zone called a strewn field. Moldavite specifically formed approximately 14.8 million years ago from the Nördlinger Ries meteorite impact in what is now Bavaria, southern Germany. The impact ejected molten material across a strewn field covering parts of present-day Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic (historically Bohemia) — which is why moldavite is also called Bohemian chrysolite or Vltavin in Czech. The olive-green color is produced by the silicate composition of the melted terrestrial rock (primarily silicon dioxide with iron and magnesium oxides), which is distinct from the composition of the meteorite itself; moldavite is essentially a terrestrial rock glass with a meteoritic origin, not a fragment of the meteorite. Moldavite is found only in the Czech Republic (particularly southern Bohemia), Moravia, and Lusatia (eastern Germany) — the boundaries of the Ries strewn field. No other source exists anywhere in the world. The total quantity of moldavite available is finite and diminishing as deposits are depleted; no new moldavite is being formed.

Moldavite's Physical Properties

Because it is a glass rather than a crystalline mineral, moldavite has physical properties that differ significantly from gemstone minerals. Its hardness is 5–5.5 Mohs — softer than quartz (7 Mohs), softer than most gemstone minerals used in rings, and comparable to glass generally. It has no cleavage (the tendency of crystalline minerals to split along specific crystallographic planes) but it does have conchoidal fracture — the same curved, shell-like breakage pattern as common glass — meaning it can chip or crack if struck against hard surfaces. Its surface texture is characteristically irregular: natural moldavite has a sculptured, wrinkled, or pitted outer surface caused by ablation (surface removal) as the glass fragment traveled through the atmosphere during formation, and this natural surface texture — called the lechatelierite or schlieren texture — is one of the primary authenticity indicators for natural stone. Moldavite's internal structure also often shows flow lines, bubbles, and other glass inclusions from the rapid cooling process. When faceted, some of this surface texture is removed by the cutting, but the internal flow structures remain visible.

Authenticity and the Moldavite Market

Moldavite is one of the most widely faked gemstones on the market. Because natural moldavite is finite, relatively scarce, and carries strong collector and spiritual demand, the financial incentive to produce glass imitations is significant. Common green glass, slag glass, and man-made tektite-like materials are sold as natural moldavite in large quantities across online markets. Key indicators of natural moldavite include: the characteristic surface texture (irregular, sculpted, worm-holed or pitted surface on unpolished material), internal flow structures and bubbles visible under magnification, the specific olive-to-bottle-green color range, and correct specific gravity (approximately 2.32–2.38 g/cm³ for natural Bohemian moldavite). Certificates of authenticity from established Czech moldavite dealers and gemological laboratories are the most reliable verification for retail buyers. Each natural moldavite stone is unique in shape, surface texture, and internal structure.

Hexagon Cut for Moldavite

The hexagon cut — a six-sided polygon with equal sides and angles — is a geometric step-cut or flat-table cut applied to the moldavite rough. The hexagon's equal six-sided symmetry is distinctive on the finger: unlike round, oval, or rectangular stone shapes that have a clear long or short axis, the regular hexagon has sixfold rotational symmetry, meaning the stone reads identically from six orientations. In the bezel setting, the hexagonal outline of the stone is fully enclosed by the bezel's metal collar, and the stone's six-sided silhouette is visible above the bezel rim from above. The geometric character of the hexagon shape echoes the split shank's architectural lines, giving the ring a coherent geometric design language across both the stone and the band.

Split Shank Design

The split shank divides the band below the bezel setting into two parallel strands that rejoin at the back of the ring. This creates visual width around the base of the center stone without increasing the stone size itself, drawing the eye toward the center stone and making the overall setting appear more substantial on the finger. The split also creates a decorative framing element below the bezel — the two diverging strands of metal pointing outward from the stone's base, echoing and complementing the hexagon's angular geometry above.

Care Instructions

  • Remove before swimming, showering, or applying lotions and perfumes (especially for plated finishes)
  • Moldavite is 5–5.5 Mohs — softer than most gemstone minerals; avoid hard impacts, rough surfaces, and contact with harder stones in storage
  • The bezel protects the stone's edges; avoid pressure or impact directly on the stone's flat face
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth only — avoid ultrasonic cleaners and soaking, which can stress the glass
  • Store in a padded box, individually, away from harder stones that could scratch the moldavite surface

About the gemstone:Keeping this gemstones gleaming for years to come is easy, there are a few things you can do:

You should always keep your gemstone jewelry away from harsh cleaning solutions and chemicals, heat sources, moisture, and abrasive cleaning methods. Sulfur, strong chemicals, chlorine, sweat/perspiration, and harsh sunlight can increase the likelihood that a gemstone jewelry piece will tarnish. It's best to keep your jewelry away from these things as much as possible. This means that you should attempt to do the following:

Don't wear your gemstone ring in the pool, hot tub, or sauna.

Remove your gemstone ring before exercising or playing sports.

Remove jewelry before working with chemicals (such as when doing household chores or yard work) or cooking with foods that contain sulfur, such as eggs and mayonnaise.

Don't Forget The Jeweler:Do you have a jewelry piece that you want restored or cleaned, but are afraid of damaging it at home? Visit your local jeweler. They can make recommendations or clean the piece for you with special tools.

Conclusion:Keeping this gemstones gleaming is easy! Wash your jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft-bristled brush, like a toothbrush. Pat dry using a soft microfiber cloth and store your jewelry in a safe, dry place when it’s not being worn.
