About Lab-Created Opal & Play-of-Colour

Opal’s defining optical property is play-of-colour: a spectral iridescence caused by the diffraction of light through a regular grid of silica spheres within the stone. As the angle of light or the angle of viewing changes, different wavelengths of light are diffracted and different colours flash across the stone’s surface — blues, greens, reds, and oranges, depending on the sphere size and arrangement. Lab-created opal replicates this internal sphere structure synthetically, producing consistent, vivid play-of-colour with higher clarity than most natural opals. The cabochon cut — smooth and domed — is the traditional and optimal cut for opal, as it maximises the surface area displaying the play-of-colour and protects the stone from edge chipping.

About the Moissanite Accent

A round brilliant lab-created moissanite is star-set flush at the centre of the opal — a fixed point of white fire within the shifting colour field. Moissanite (silicon carbide) has a higher refractive index than diamond, producing strong brilliance from a small stone.
